Pierce County Professional Firefighters

Political Action

Most firefighters didn’t sign up for this job to be involved in politics — they signed up to serve their community. But whether we like it or not, every decision that shapes our work is made by someone who was elected or appointed by someone elected.

Turning Brotherhood Into Advocacy

Why Politics Matters to Firefighters

Most firefighters didn’t sign up for this job to be involved in politics — they signed up to serve their community. But whether we like it or not, every decision that shapes our work is made by someone who was elected or appointed by someone elected. From safety standards and staffing levels to pay, benefits, retirement security, and union rights, politics directly impacts every aspect of our careers and our ability to protect the public.

Politics is not about partisanship. It’s a tool — one that allows us to build power, protect our members, and advocate for policies that keep our firefighters and the communities we serve safe. When we engage, we ensure that the voices of those on the front lines are heard by those in the decision-making rooms.

Public Safety Depends on Public Policy

Becoming Politically Active

Firefighters have earned tremendous trust from the public. That trust gives us a unique opportunity — and responsibility — to help shape the future of public safety through civic engagement.

Here are ways you can get involved:
Stay informed: Know what’s on the ballot and who’s making decisions that affect your station, department, and livelihood.
Vote: Make sure you and your family are registered and participate in every election — local, state, and national.
Support endorsed candidates: Stand behind leaders who support public safety, working families, and fair labor practices.
Volunteer: Help campaign for firefighter-friendly candidates. Even a few hours of doorbelling, phone calls, or sign-waving can make a difference.
Engage respectfully: Build relationships with local officials and community leaders. Being seen as a professional, informed voice gives firefighters a seat at the table.

Building political knowledge and skills turns firefighters from side players into respected leaders. The stronger our collective voice, the greater our influence when it comes to decisions that impact us all.
